Umpiring is a skill and a craft, an art and a science. It requires knowledge of the rules, sound judgment, athleticism, knowledge of mechanics and position, and game management skills. It is often said that an umpire has done his or her job well if no one has noticed the umpire at all.

Rules for 6 and 7 Year Olds have been posted on the Rules Page

04/17/08 - Inform coaches at your games tonight and Saturday that balks will be enforced more strictly beginning on Monday.  Be sure to call balks that give the pitcher an advantage over the base runner.  (Balks:  Not stopping in a set position, any movement after pitcher is set, etc.)  A change in direction is not considered stopping in a set position.

04/17/08 - Reminder:  Batters interference does not have to be intentional.  It includes interfering with the catchers fielding or throwing by leaning over the plate, stepping out of the batters box, or any other movement which hinders a catcher’s play on a runner.  A catcher does not have to make a throw for interference to be called, but the throw must be “hindered”.  Please use good judgment.  If you have any questions about balks or interference, please email Lance Weems or Bill Wilder.

Our last regular season meeting will be on Sunday, May 4th at 2:00pm in the SMP Board Room to discuss end of the season tournaments.  We will also discuss rules and questions that have come up throughout the season. (This meeting has been postponed until Sunday, May 11th at 2:00 pm)

The last regular season meeting has been moved to Sunday, May 11th at 2:00 pm in the SMP Board Room.
